Alonzo Mourning's Charities
Alonzo Mourning has always been known for his work in the community, contributing countless hours of his personal time and money for the good of others. The Alonzo Mourning Charitable Fund at the Dade Community Foundation was established in 1997 and has generated more than one million dollars in monetary and economic benefits for the Children's Home Society of Florida, and 100 Black Men of South Florida, Inc. With Zo's Summer Groove entering its fifth year, Alonzo's goal every year has been to increase corporate participation and attendance and generate even more funds and benefits for his charities.
Children's Home Society of Florida
The Children's Home Society of Florida (CHS) was established on a foundation of love in 1902. Back then, children were sometimes treated more as property than as family and there were very few laws to protect them from abuse. Poverty was rampant and there was not a public welfare system for the financial support of children. CHS stepped in to help these children, many of who had been orphaned by epidemics, tuberculosis and industrial accident. The seed that was planted at the turn of the century now has grown to 14 branches throughout Florida to serve the ever-changing needs of disadvantaged children in our state. Today, CHS is the oldest and largest statewide nonprofit organization-serving children in Florida.
The Children's Home Society's services first centered in orphanages, but have since blossomed into a wide array of services including adoption, foster care, emergency shelters, group homes for children of all ages, family counseling, parenting training, day care programs for special needs children, programs for developmentally challenged children, prevention programs and programs for families affected by HIV. They also provide maternity and mother/child programs, teen pregnancy prevention, and services for runaway and homeless youths. 100 Black Men of South Florida
For more than three decades, 100 Black Men chapters across the nation have touched the lives of more than 60,00 young people. Through the 100's mentoring, education, anti-violence and economic development programs, young people are gaining a competitive edge. With a mission "to improve the quality of life of our communities and enhance educational and economic opportunities," their members continue to serve as a strong force for overcoming the cultural and financial obstacles that have limited the achievements of youth with a particular emphasis on young African-American males. Visit the official sites of 100 Black Men of South Florida and 100 Black Men of America for more information.
